How to Fix a Screw That Won't Hold (Furniture, Cabinets)
Paano Ayusin ang Tornilyo na Hindi Kumakapit (Furniture, Cabinets)
Quick Summary
When a screw keeps spinning and won't grip — in a cabinet hinge, table leg, or door handle — the hole has gotten too big. Fill it with toothpicks or matchsticks, then re-drive the screw. This classic carpenter trick takes 10 minutes and costs nothing.
What You Need
Mga Kakailanganin Mo
- 2-4 toothpicks or wooden matchsticks — the wooden kind, not plastic
- Wood glue (optional but recommended) — ₱30-50 at Ace Hardware or Handyman
- Screwdriver — matching the screw head (usually Phillips/cross)
Steps
Mga Hakbang
-
Remove the screw completely
Unscrew and pull the screw out of the hole. If a hinge or bracket is attached, remove it too so you can work on the hole freely.
-
Fill the hole with toothpicks
Dip 2-4 toothpicks (or matchsticks with the heads snapped off) in wood glue and push them into the hole. Pack them in tightly. If you don't have wood glue, they still work without it — the fit will just be slightly less permanent. Break off any excess sticking out so the surface is flush.
-
Re-drive the screw
If you used glue, wait 15-30 minutes for it to set (or skip waiting if no glue). Drive the screw back into the same hole. The toothpicks give the screw fresh wood to grip into. It should feel tight and solid now.
-
This works on any wood surface — cabinet doors, table legs, bed frames, wooden door handles, towel racks. If the screw hole is in drywall or concrete, this trick won't work. For drywall, you need wall anchors (₱20-30 pack at Ace Hardware).
