What is DTI Business Name Registration?
Ano ang DTI Business Name Registration?
DTI Business Name registration gives a sole proprietor the right to use a business name within the approved territorial scope. It is not yet a business permit, BIR registration, or tax clearance. It simply registers the name you will use, such as a sari-sari store name, online shop name, food stall name, or home service brand.
If you are forming a partnership, corporation, or One Person Corporation, you do not register the entity name with DTI. You register with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Cooperatives go through the CDA. DTI is the usual route for the simplest one-owner business.
Sa Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) iyon.
Who Needs It?
Sino ang Kailangan Nito?
You need DTI registration if you are doing business as a sole proprietor using a name other than your true personal name. For example, if Maria Santos sells pastries only as "Maria Santos," DTI may not be the key issue. If she uses "Maria's Bakeshop" or "Tita Mia Pastries," that is a business name and should be registered.
The BNRS FAQ also reminds owners that a DTI certificate is not authority to operate. You still need local permits, BIR registration, and any sector-specific permits such as sanitary permit, FDA license, or barangay clearance depending on the business.
Territorial Scope: Barangay, City, Regional, National
Territorial Scope: Barangay, City, Regional, National
As of May 2026 (per the official BNRS FAQ at bnrs.dti.gov.ph), DTI registration fees are based on territorial scope, plus ₱30 Documentary Stamp Tax. Always verify with BNRS before paying since fees may be revised:
| Scope | Fee | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| Barangay | ₱200 + ₱30 DST | Single neighborhood shop or testing a micro idea |
| City/Municipality | ₱500 + ₱30 DST | Local store or services within one city or town |
| Regional | ₱1,000 + ₱30 DST | Business using the name across a region |
| National | ₱2,000 + ₱30 DST | Online brand, franchise plan, or broad expansion |
Scope protects use of the name in that territory; it is not a limit on where customers can buy from you. If you sell online nationwide, national scope is usually cleaner.
| Scope | Fee | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| Barangay | ₱200 + ₱30 DST | Single neighborhood shop o testing ng micro idea |
| City/Municipality | ₱500 + ₱30 DST | Local store o services within one city o town |
| Regional | ₱1,000 + ₱30 DST | Business na gagamit ng name across a region |
| National | ₱2,000 + ₱30 DST | Online brand, franchise plan, o broad expansion |
Validity: 5 Years, Renewable
Validity: 5 Years, Renewable
A DTI Business Name certificate is valid for five years from registration. You can renew online through BNRS. DTI regional announcements also state that business names can be renewed as early as 180 days before expiration. If you file late, BNRS says an additional 50% may be charged for late filing.
Renewal is also the right time to correct addresses, email, and scope if the BNRS flow allows it. Keep the old certificate, official receipt, reference code, and renewed certificate in one folder because LGUs and banks may ask for the registration history.
Do not confuse this with the mayor's permit, which is normally renewed yearly with your LGU. DTI is five years; local permit is usually annual; BIR registration continues until updated or closed.
Pwede itong i-renew online through BNRS. Ayon din sa DTI regional announcements, pwedeng mag-renew as early as 180 days before expiration.
DTI ay five years; local permit ay usually annual; BIR registration ay nagpapatuloy hanggang i-update o i-close.

What to Do if Your Name is Rejected
Ano ang Gagawin Kung Rejected ang Name
BNRS may reject names that are too similar to existing names, generic, misleading, immoral, restricted by law, connected to government offices, or using terms reserved for corporations, cooperatives, or protected organizations. Words like "corporation," "incorporated," and "cooperative" are not for DTI sole proprietorship names.
Fix it by making the dominant name more distinctive and the descriptor more specific. Instead of "The Milk Tea Shop," try a unique brand plus a descriptor such as "Luna Sip Milk Tea Trading." Before paying, also search social handles and domain availability so your DTI name, Facebook page, and .com.ph domain can match.
- Choose national scope for serious online brands. The extra fee is small compared with rebranding later.
- Use the same spelling everywhere. DTI, LGU, BIR, bank, marketplace, and receipts should match.
- Reserve your domain and handles. Check .com, .com.ph, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and marketplace names before payment.
- Do not stop at DTI. The next steps are LGU permits and BIR registration before operating.
