What Are SSS Pensions?
Ano ang mga SSS Pension?
The Social Security System (SSS) provides four types of pension benefits to members and their beneficiaries. These are funded by the monthly contributions you and your employer pay throughout your working years.
- Retirement Pension — monthly pension or lump sum for members who reach age 60 (optional) or 65 (mandatory). If you have at least 120 monthly contributions, you get a monthly pension for life. Less than 120 contributions = lump sum.
- Disability Pension — for members who become permanently disabled (total or partial) while under SSS coverage. Requires at least 36 monthly contributions for monthly pension; less than 36 = lump sum.
- Death/Survivorship Pension — monthly pension paid to the primary beneficiaries (spouse, dependent children) of a deceased member. Requires at least 36 monthly contributions for monthly pension.
- Funeral Benefit — one-time cash grant of ₱12,000 to ₱60,000 to the person who paid for the funeral of a deceased member. The amount depends on the member's total contributions.

How Much Will You Get
Magkano ang Makukuha Mo
Your monthly SSS pension is computed using three formulas — SSS automatically uses whichever gives you the highest amount:
The 3 Pension Formulas
Ang 3 Formula ng Pension
Formula 1: ₱300 + (20% x AMSC) + (2% x AMSC x [CYS - 10])

Formula 2: 40% x AMSC

Formula 3 (minimum pension): ₱1,200 if you have 10-19 CYS, or ₱2,400 if you have 20+ CYS
Formula 3 (minimum pension): ₱1,200 kung mayroon kang 10-19 CYS, o ₱2,400 kung mayroon kang 20+ CYS

Kung saan:
- AMSC = Average Monthly Salary Credit (average of your highest 60 monthly salary credits, or all months if less than 60)
- CYS = Credited Years of Service (total months of contributions divided by 12, rounded down)
- CYS = Credited Years of Service (kabuuang buwan ng kontribusyon na hinati sa 12, nire-round down)

Pension Reform 2025-2027 Tranches
Pension Reform 2025-2027 na mga Tranche
Under the SSS Pension Reform Act, pension increases are being implemented in tranches. The 2026 contribution rate is 15% of MSC (10% employer + 5% employee), with the Monthly Salary Credit (MSC) range at ₱5,000 to ₱35,000. Higher MSC ceilings are scheduled for future years, which will gradually increase pension amounts for new retirees.
Lump Sum vs Monthly Pension
Lump Sum vs Buwanang Pension
Whether you receive a monthly pension or a lump sum depends entirely on your total number of monthly contributions:
- 120+ contributions = monthly pension for life. This is the target. A monthly pension continues until you die, and your surviving spouse and dependent children continue to receive a survivorship pension after your death.
- Less than 120 contributions = lump sum only. You receive a one-time payment equal to the total contributions (employee + employer share) plus interest. No monthly pension, no 13th month, no dependents' allowance.
- 120+ kontribusyon = buwanang pension habambuhay.
Walang buwanang pension, walang 13th month, walang dependents' allowance.
For disability and death/survivorship pensions, the threshold is lower at 36 monthly contributions. Below 36 = lump sum; 36 or more = monthly pension.

- Mandatory component: If your Monthly Salary Credit (MSC) exceeds ₱20,000, the portion of contributions above the ₱20,000 MSC ceiling automatically goes into the Pension Booster fund
- Voluntary option: Any SSS member can make additional voluntary contributions to the Pension Booster (minimum ₱500 per month)
- Tax-free: Pension Booster proceeds are exempt from income tax
- Returns: The fund earns approximately 7% annual returns based on SSS investment performance
- Withdrawal: You can claim Pension Booster savings as a lump sum upon retirement, disability, or death (for beneficiaries), on top of your regular SSS pension

Pro Tips for SSS Pension Claims
Mga Payo para sa SSS Pension Claims
- Check your contributions NOW. Log in to My.SSS and verify your contribution record under Member Info > Contributions. If you see missing months (common for members who changed employers), file an SSS Contribution Discrepancy Report immediately — do not wait until retirement age.
- Continue paying as a voluntary member. If you are unemployed, self-employed, or an OFW and close to 120 contributions, continue paying voluntary contributions (minimum ₱750/month in 2026) to reach the monthly pension threshold.
- Update your beneficiaries regularly. Go to My.SSS > E-Services > Member Data Change Request to update your beneficiary list. Changes in marital status, new children, or death of a listed beneficiary should be reported immediately to avoid claim disputes.
- Complete your ACOP every year. The Annual Confirmation of Pensioner (ACOP) is required every birthday month for retirees and survivorship pensioners. Failure to submit ACOP will result in suspension of your pension. Do it online through My.SSS or visit any SSS branch.
- Enroll your UMID-ATM for seamless pension deposits. The UMID card doubles as an ATM card if you enroll it with the issuing bank. This is the simplest way to receive your monthly pension without maintaining a separate bank account.
- SSS hotline: (02) 8920-6446 to 55 or text SSS to 2600 (Globe) / 282 (Smart) for status inquiries and general questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Mga Madalas Itanong
What is the most common mistake when filing for SSS pension?
Filing with incomplete or incorrect documents. The top issues are: mismatched names between your SSS record and PSA documents (maiden vs married name), expired IDs, missing PSA birth certificates (using local civil registrar copies instead), and incorrect bank account details. Verify everything in My.SSS first.
How long does SSS pension processing really take?
The official target is 30 working days from complete document submission. Online claims with clean records are often processed in 2-4 weeks. Claims with discrepancies, missing documents, or requiring additional verification can take 2-3 months. The first pension payment usually arrives 1-2 months after approval.
What happens if I miss my ACOP (Annual Confirmation of Pensioner)?
Your pension will be suspended starting the month after your birthday month. To reactivate, complete the ACOP online via My.SSS or visit an SSS branch with your valid ID. Suspended pension months will be paid as back pay once your ACOP is completed.
Can I continue paying SSS contributions as a voluntary member to reach 120?
Yes. If you are separated from employment, you can register as a voluntary or self-employed member and continue paying contributions. The minimum voluntary contribution in 2026 is ₱750/month. You can pay at SSS branches, accredited banks, bayad centers, GCash, or Maya. This is one of the best financial decisions you can make if you are close to 120.
Oo.
Can I convert a lump sum claim to a monthly pension later?
No. Once you receive a lump sum retirement benefit, you cannot convert it to a monthly pension. This is why it is critical to reach 120 contributions before filing. If you already received a lump sum, you cannot re-enter the SSS system to accumulate more contributions.
When do SSS pension increases happen?
Pension increases are legislated — there is no automatic annual increase. The last major increase was under the SSS Pension Reform Act, implemented in tranches from 2025-2027. Future increases require new legislation. The ₱1,000 monthly allowance and 13th month pension were added by previous pension increase laws and remain in effect.
